Where to Buy MagZip®: 4 Ways to Get It on Your Clothes

MagZip Round #5 magnetic separating zipper with its magnetic base and slider

Where to buy MagZip: you have four options. Buy clothing with MagZip® already sewn in, from ANKHGEAR® or another brand that uses it. Add a ZipperBuddy to a jacket you already own, with no sewing. Or buy a MagZip zipper and have a tailor or seamstress sew it in. The right choice depends on the jacket you want to wear.

If you've been curious about MagZip but still have questions, this post is for you. Here is how each option works, who it fits, and how to tell which one to pick.

What MagZip is, in one minute

MagZip is a patented magnetic zipper. Magnets at the base pull the two sides together and line them up for you. You bring the halves close, let the magnets meet, then pull up. No pinching a small pin into the box. Once it's closed, it works like any other zipper.

MagZip launched with Under Armour and has been on major brands since, including Tommy Hilfiger and Lululemon. ANKHGEAR makes MagZip and sells it directly.

Where to buy MagZip: the 4 options

1. Clothing with MagZip already built in

The simplest path is a garment that already has it. ANKHGEAR sells adult hoodies, hoodie and jogger sets, and kids' hoodies with MagZip sewn in. Nothing to install. Put it on and zip. See the full line on our ANKHGEAR clothing page.

2. MagZip on other brands

Other brands use MagZip too. Tommy Hilfiger has carried several jackets with it. Stores that focus on easy-dressing clothing, such as Silvert's and Joe & Bella, have also carried garments with MagZip. Lineups change by season, so check the product description for the word "MagZip" before you buy.

One thing to watch for. A jacket labeled "magnetic closure" is not always a magnetic zipper. Many magnetic closures are snaps or a flap. If you want a real zipper that starts with magnets, look for MagZip by name.

3. ZipperBuddy: add MagZip to a jacket you already own

If you love the coat you have, you don't need a new one. ZipperBuddy zips onto your jacket's existing zipper. No needle, no glue. The first install takes about ten minutes. To take it off, unzip it, and the jacket is exactly as it was.

The standard ZipperBuddy fits a #5 plastic-tooth separating zipper. That's the chunky molded-tooth zipper on most hoodies, fleeces and mid-weight coats. Flip the zipper pull over and look for a "5" stamped on the back. Metal teeth, coil teeth, or an unusual length? A Custom ZipperBuddy is built to your jacket. If you order the wrong length, side or type, we swap it free.

Use the ZipperBuddy finder to pick the right one in about a minute.

4. Sew a MagZip zipper into your clothes

For a jacket with a coil or metal zipper you want to replace, or a sewing project of your own, buy a MagZip zipper and sew it in. A MagZip is a full separating zipper, slider included, and it goes in the same way a standard zipper does.

We recommend a tailor or seamstress for the install. Bring the jacket and the MagZip to them and ask for a standard separating zipper replacement. They don't need special tools. A skilled home sewer can do it too. Shop sizes, lengths and colors on our MagZip zippers page.

How to choose between them

  • Want something new to wear? Buy clothing with MagZip built in.
  • Have a jacket you love with a #5 plastic zipper? Get a ZipperBuddy. No sewing.
  • Have a jacket with a coil or metal zipper? Get a Custom ZipperBuddy, or have a tailor sew in a MagZip.
  • Make or alter clothes yourself? Buy MagZip zippers by size and length.

Picking a MagZip zipper for sewing

If you go the sew-in route, you'll choose a size, a base and a length. #5 is the common weight on hoodies and light jackets. #8 is heavier, for coats and outerwear. Our guide to choosing the right MagZip walks through round and square bases and both sizes.

Can't find the exact length? Buy one a little longer. Like most zippers, a MagZip can be shortened and finished with a new top stop.

Common questions

Can I add MagZip to any jacket?

Most of them. ZipperBuddy works on #5 plastic separating zippers with no sewing. Other zippers need a Custom ZipperBuddy or a MagZip sewn in.

Will my tailor know how to install it?

Yes. It installs like a standard separating zipper. Bring the MagZip and the jacket together so they can match the length.

How do I know if a jacket from another brand has MagZip?

Look for "MagZip" in the product name or description. MagZip is a registered trademark, and brands that use it usually name it. Still not sure? Read our FAQ or ask us. A real person answers.
